Caill-milly, Nathalie; Duclercq, Benoit; Morandeau, Gilles; De Casamajor, Marie-noelle.
Introduction: With the objective of diversifying current fishing and at the request of professionals in Aquitaine, the Regional Commission of Maritime Fishing and Marine Breeding (CRPMEM) of Aquitaine has started a discussion about the possibilities of opening a shellfishery. In the context of this course of action, and because of the absence of information on the presence and size of the resource, the CRPMEM of Aquitaine asked IFREMER's Halieutic Resources Laboratory of Aquitaine (LRHA) for assistance in acquiring information on the subject. At the same time, a prospective analysis study of the exploitation of shellfish off the coast of Aquitaine—regulation and business section—was performed by the CRPMEM of Aquitaine (Coiffec, 2006). At that same time,...

First record of Parapristipoma octolineatum (Haemulidae) on the French Atlantic coast. ArchiMer
De Casamajor, Marie-noelle.
A specimen of African striped grunt Parapristipoma octolineatum was observed on the French part of the Bay of Biscay. This is the first and the most northern record of this species in the Northeastern Atlantic. Moreover, no specimen of this family was ever listed in this geographical area. Repeated observations of the same individual during the four consecutive past years in summer (2013-2016), suggest its adaptation to environmental conditions of this area.

Analysis of glass eels catches from 1927 to 1998 in the Adour estuary showed different periods of successive decrease. Fishing periods between 1985 to 1993 were studied iwn order to observe impact of hydroclimatic conditions on the level of catch per unit of effort. This study took place in January when glass eels accessibility by the fishery was generally the highest. With hand and trawl netting that filtered the upper part of the water column, only individuals located close to the surface were accessible. Consequently, factors acting on the migration of glass eels in the water column have a great importance on the fishing success. Among environmental conditions, moon phase and temperature influence were determinant factors on catch variability but a lack...

How determining a small set of indicator species useful in environmental monitoring? A case study of intertidal boulder fields macrofauna (Northern Basque coast) using the R package "indicspecies". ArchiMer
Lalanne, Yann; Huguenin, Laura; De Casamajor, Marie-noelle.
Ecological  indicators are useful to monitor environmental changes and assess ecological management and conservation. They provide information to understand the environment and its health status while also highlighting changes in the environment by giving early warning signals. Among them, the identification of indicator species add ecological meaning to studied sites and their use is an alternative to sampling the entire biodiversity. The northern Basque  coast (located in  the  South  of  the  Bay  of  Biscay marine sub-area  - France) is  dominated by remarkable rocky habitats as stable platforms and mobile boulder fields exposed to swells and freshwater incomes. Recently, the context of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive emphasized significant...

Biological data on glass eels (Anguilla anguilla) were collected during two successive sampling periods from November to March (1996-1997 and 1997-1998) on the Adour estuary. As for other estuaries, decrease in length (mean of 73.5 to 67.4 mm) and weight (mean of 3.5 to 2.6 dg) of glass eels were observed. Weight and length characteristics were used to identify groups of glass eels. These groups were well distinguished during the first sampling period but some overlaps appeared in the second one. Fluctuations of static allometry and similarity coefficients showed successive glass eels arrivals in the lower part of the estuary during the two seasons. We used fluctuations of the index of similarity in the second period to describe arrivals of glass-eels...

Impact of urban effluents on subtidal and intertidal rocky biocenosis along the Basque coast ArchiMer
Huguenin, Laura; De Casamajor, Marie-noelle; Lalanne, Yann; Gorostiaga, José-maria; Monperrus, Mathilde.
In compliance with the Water Framework Directive (WFD), the good ecological status assessment for Channel-Atlantic coastal water bodies is currently carried out in the intertidal and subtidal zones using a biological indicator based on macroalgae on the rocky coasts. The second step of this Directive (2016-2021) deals with the workings of the marine ecosystem. Therefore, macrofauna has also to be taken into account in the both zones. Current works about the WFD indicator of pressure-impact interactions show deficiencies on how the biological indicators respond to each pressure regarding magnitude and type. Therefore, the implementation of a monitoring program on the southern rocky coast is essential to understand and assess the proper ecological condition...

Impact of wastewater treatment plant discharges on macroalgae and macrofauna assemblages of the intertidal rocky shore in the southeastern Bay of Biscay ArchiMer
Huguenin, L.; Lalanne, Y.; De Casamajor, Marie-noelle; Gorostiaga, J.-m.; Quintano, E.; Salerno, M.; Monperrus, M..
Rocky intertidal habitats are particularly vulnerable to anthropogenic pressures especially in areas with high urban concentrations such as southeastern Bay of Biscay. This research aims to establish an assessment of the potential impact of sewage discharges on intertidal rocky benthic assemblages on macroalgae and on macrofauna as required by the European Directives (Water Framework Directive -WFD and Marine Strategy Framework Directive -MSFD). The assemblages were sampled at five locations according to a control-impact design. A moderate detectable effect of discharges was highlighted on the assemblage structure by means of multivariate analyses but this was less evident using other biological and ecological metrics. Results would also suggest that...

An index CCO (cover, characteristic species, opportunistic species) has been developed for the implementation of the European Water Framework Directory (WFD) in coastal waters, using intertidal macroalgal communities as bio-indicator (Biological Quality Element). CCO is based on the calculation of three metrics corresponding to the global cover of macroalgal communities (metric 1), the number of characteristic species per topographic level/seaweed community (metric 2) and the cover of opportunistic species (metric 3). The final rating is obtained by pooling the scores of the three metrics. Results are given for 32 sites in 29 water bodies, grouped into four biogeographic regions along the Channel–Atlantic coasts of France. Over the six-year study, most of...

Indicator species of intertidal boulder fields on the French Basque coast ArchiMer
Lalanne, Yann; Huguenin, Laura; Lissardy, Muriel; Bru, Noelle; D'Amico, Franck; Castège, Iker; Milon, Emilie; De Casamajor, Marie-noelle.
The rocky Basque coast presents an interest both in terms of biogeography and its patrimonial situation, alongside its habitats, fauna and flora. The aim of the BIGORNO project (Intertidal Biodiversity of the south of the Bay of Biscay and Observation for New research and Monitoring for decision support), financed by the Agency of Marine Protected Areas (AAMP) and the Departmental Council (CD 64), is to respond to significant deficiencies on biocenosis in the southern marine subregion “Bay of Biscay”. Investigations carried out in the WFD, since 2008, constitute an important basis of work for integration of fauna. Field studies undertaken since 2015 consisting of a sampling design suited to the substrates heterogeneity and the presence of microhabitats...

During recent decades, works on rocky shore biodiversity have been multiplied in the southern part of the Bay of Biscay and more precisely on intertidal and subtidal area were communities present a great interest. Necessity of conservation of coastal habitats and their communities and a growing pressure on coastal environments explain awareness of services provided by these ecosystems. Those communities are very sensitive to water quality change. Moreover, since the beginning of the XXI century various European directives require a good ecological status of coastal waters and conservation of their communities : Water Framework Directive (WFD), Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) and conservation of habitats with Directive Habitat Fauna and Flora...

Larval history of glass eels, Anguilla anguilla, (Linne, 1758) in migration in coastal and estuarine areas (Adour, Bay of Biscay) as revealed by otolith structure. ArchiMer
De Casamajor, Marie-noelle; Lecomte Finiger, Raymonde; Prouzet, Patrick.
The embryonic past of glass eels vas studied from the interpretation of microstructures registered on otoliths. The aim of this work is to put in evidence possible seasonal modifications of the growth of otoliths so that differences between otoliths of glass eels caught off marine and estuarine environment. So during the season 1999-2000, from November till March, otolith sampling was realised in the Southwestern part of France, in an estuarine and coastal zone. We observed a spatial and temporal evolution of proportions of the three various types of otoliths taken into account. Glass eels sampled at sea sometimes have a mark on their otoliths indicating the transition in the estuary, especially at the end of the fishing season. Measures of growth marks of...

Debenay, Jean-pierre; Geslin, Emmanuelle; Guillou, Jean-jacques; De Casamajor, Marie-noelle.
This work is based on about 2,000 samples. It provides a synthetic description of the distribution patterns of fûraminiferal assemblages in paralie environments and shows on two examples the effect of anthropogenic impacts. It shows that despite the great diversity of eeological parameters, foraminiferal assemblages are naturally distributeà along a fev/ major gradients. Anomalies in these distribution patterns or morphological abnormalities of the tests indicate anthropogenic or natural stresses. An increase in the number of individuals, specifie richness and test size indicate organic pollution while chemicai pollution as an inverse effect. ln Port-Joinville harbour, Cribroelphidium excavatum and Haynesina gennanica characterize the areas submited to the...

Marine larval past of glass eel Anguilla anguilla migrating in the Adour estuary ArchiMer
De Casamajor, Marie-noelle; Lecomte-finiger, R; Prouzet, Patrick.
Along biometric characteristics, glass eel otoliths were collected during three migration seasons, in the Adour estuary, during the new moon of January. Microstructure reading and measurements of various growth zones bring information on glass eel larval life during their oceanic migration and the transition phase in estuary. The results show significant inter-annual variations of glass eels otolithometric characteristics from the point of view of their typology as of the various growth zones measured during transoceanic migration. The differences observed between the years on the typology level could be related to very fluctuating environmental conditions during recruitment. The differences in measurements carried out on the registered otolith zones would...
